North Sea Flood
Reproductions from glass plate negatives, from the 1953 North Sea Flood.

A large batch of glass plate negatives came into my possession during a move on the university where I worked, just before they were to be thrown away.

It appeared that some of the negatives were shot directly after the North Sea Flood in 1953, in Zeeland in the Netherlands. To get a first impression with a low-res scan, reproductions from the 8x8 cm and 9x12 cm plates were made with a Pentax K5-II DSLR + DFA 50mm f/2.8 Macro lens and constant backlighting via a white Perspex plate as diffuser. They are shown below.

The negatives are very contrasty, probably because they were shot on repro material ('for line and screen work', Gevaert Replica Anti Halo and others). The tonal range was adjusted in post-processing to get acceptable results and scratches and spots were removed.

There is a remote possibility that these plates are actually reproductions of prints to glass because I found some copies in the batch which show edges of photos with wavy patterns (a fad in those days).
