Artificial abstract - Introduction
Abstracts made with generative AI

Almost all AI generated images on this website are photo-like and realistic, hence the overall category 'Artificial realism'. The AI generated abstracts though are an exception, and they are kept separated in the bullet-list in Archives as Artificial Abstract, and they have their own index page accessible via Abstract in all the page headers.

It might perhaps come as a surprise that AI generators like DALL-E can make true abstract imagery, but this can be done by following the same procedure as for realistic images. The prompt should at least have a parameter 'abstract', supplemented with a description of how the pattern should look. That's all.

When making abstracts with generative AI, they are judged for aesthetics, composition, lighting, and originality, among other things to sort the best of them out. Most of the time it is only a small percentage that is kept, but this is not different from classic photography or when generating photo-like AI images. However, in the end there are often beautiful and original results that can be used as they are and shown on a screen, or as a prototype for making a painting in oil or acrylic.

Objects can also be abstract. Of course, they are shown here on screen as two-dimensional, but it is possible to make a physical copy, in a workshop or with a 3D printer, which is in line with the tradition of creating abstract sculptures.

The strict definition for 'abstract' used on this website is that the image doesn't represent any existing objects or scenes in real life; it is nonrepresentational. Consequently, the titles of the images are also neutral and only contain a serial number "A_nnn" (Artificial abstract A_001..A_999, A = Artificial).

The actual generated abstracts on this website are shown in index Archives as Artificial Abstract when posted, they are not shown in Photos after 2023.
